Passive House

Passive House

Passive House is the building standard of the future. But the future isn’t as far off as you might think.

Climate change is a hot topic these days, and evidence suggests buildings consume up to 40 percent of global energy use and contribute up to 30 percent of annual global greenhouse gas emissions. This means that by simply living in or working in your home or office you are contributing to global warming. But the Passive House movement is changing that.

What Is A Passive House?

Sol Sustainable Passive House

A Passive House is a home that has highly engineered energy efficiency and meets rigorous design standards to keep energy use as low as possible.

It is a voluntary standard to achieve comfort, beauty, affordability and the lowest environmental impact possible. But what does that mean for you? It means the home you build will be beautifully designed to your tastes and for your family and will help keep planet earth safe for future generations to come.

So aside from being beautifully built and designed from the inside out, passive homes can save you up to 85% on your utility bills, can reduce allergens in your home and give you a fine-tuned control over indoor air quality and temperature with simple to use, durable systems.

If you’re worried about the upfront costs of building a passive house, just know that the reduced operating costs and the increase to your property value quickly makeup for any additional upfront costs and the peace of mind you’ll get from reducing your carbon footprint is priceless.

What Are The Requirements Of A Passive House?

The international Passive House standard – which we look to in Canada – requires:

  • Space head demand max. 15kWh/m2a OR heading load max 10W/m2
  • Pressurization test result at 50 Pa max. 0.6 ACH (both over-pressure and under-pressure)
  • Total Primary Energy Demand max. 120 kWh/m2a
